Green deal 154: Cirkelstad
In 2006 the first Cirkelstad (Circle City) project started in Rotterdam. That project gained a lot of experience with high-quality reuse and recycling of construction waste, and involving people with a distance to the labor market. To follow up on this project, the Green Deal Circle City was closed.
The ambition was to develop five new Circle Cities in the Netherlands.
Almost 95% of construction waste in the Netherlands is recycled. What distinguishes Cirkelstad is that waste keeps its value and that materials are given a new life at least at the same level.
Cirkelstad is an overall completing concept. The coalition partners guarantee that the materials cycle is closed, but they also train people and create jobs. Interest in participating in the Green Deal was high from the start. The condition for participation was that a concrete project was in the picture.
The Green Deal Cirkelstad is in line with the ambitions of the national government: to support the transition to a circular and inclusive economy with regard to material cycles in the construction sector.
