New Circular Economy Business Model for More Sustainable Urban Construction

Prinsenhof A: Circulair Mining

The arrival of the new Province House in Arnhem has made the provincial office building Prinsenhof A redundant and empty. Moreover, the building is difficult to renovate. Therefore, this building will be demolished.

As the province has an exemplary function based on various sustainability ambitions, including circular economy, we choose a sustainable way of demolition: circular mining. In doing so, we are making space in Prinsenhof for redevelopment of this area.

The contractor, Lagemaat, will use a large part of the released materials, including the concrete structures, for the construction of a new building. Any residual streams that cannot be directly reused at a high value will be used for high-quality recycling.

Circular Construction Economy interview with process manager Maik Knuiman:
'We assumed a traditional demolition project with a plus for the pioneering part. The province invests in the difference with traditional demolition to boost the market. After all, you cannot yet expect a new way of working to outweigh efficient old ways of working. We expect the final difference to be between 0% and 30%.'
